Description The theme of the article is the second poem of Abélard's book of poetry Planctus, lament of Jacob over the loss of his sons (Planctus Iacob super filios suos). The research history of the poem is reviewed, as well as opinions on its formal and contentual structure and its literary value. The inner composition of the poem is described and the poem itself is put in context of medieval Latin consolatory literature and (partially) liturgical drama (Ordo Rachelis). The author also considers using some parts of the poem for the discussion on the reflection of child and childhood in medieval literature. For the Czech public also the Czech translation of the poem is available.
