| Description | Two actors of the edition represent prominent Czech historians. Josef Šusta (1874-1945) together with Josef Pekař established not only the powerful couple which principally influenced the Czech and Czechoslovak historiography (particularly in 1920s and 1930s), but also contributed to education of younger representatives of historical scholarship, such us František Hrubý (1887-1943). The extensive introduction covers all important personal, academic, and public events in the life of Šusta and Hrubý. The actual edition brings unique collection of a letter exchange covering more than 20 years. The correspondence illuminates personal, scholarly and organizational life in the Czech historiography from the early years of the first Czechoslovak Republic to the Nazi occupation. It uncovers functioning of the ČČH (Czech Historical Review), creation of World history synthesis (History of Mankind), interrelations between political life and the Czechoslovak historical scholarship, etc. The rich corpus of correspondence is accompanied with several appendices, i.e. selection from Hrubýs diary, funeral sermon on Fr. Hrubý by historian Rudolf Hrubý. |
