Description The aim of the paper is to develop a theoretical framework for reflections on the role of adult learning and education within lifelong learning. To achieve this, the author has selected two perspectives. One is an “outsider” point of view, i.e. focusing on discussion of social and economic aspects of adult education in the contemporary context of knowledge society and learning society, while the other is an “insider” point of view, i.e. an account of the need and motivation of adults to keep learning for the whole of their lives. The question is what it is that gives rise to this need and motivation, by what it is aroused and which areas it concerns. The author also deals with issues in adult education implementation, seeing the path to further development of all of its kinds and forms in the assumptions and principles lifelong learning is based on. The paper previews individual papers forming the core of the volume of proceedings, dealing with specific areas of adult education such as occupational training, family life education, leisure-time activity training, civic education, pre-senior and senior age education etc.
