Description The contribution deals with the issue to what extent the language of contemporary private correspondence reflects the authors’ background as far as dialects are concerned. The text analyses 224 private letters from the above-mentioned corpus, written in the period from 1990 to 2003 by young people from the Silesian dialectal area. Considerably receding elements are those upon which a more detailed classification of Silesian dialects is based, elements in which the particular smaller dialectal groups differ from one another. Remaining elements are those which are less marked, with the maximum areal extent within Silesian dialects or elements outreaching to Moravian dialects (having thus a stronger position, as they are elements not only Silesian, but more generally Moravian) and also those elements corresponding with the colloquial variety of standard language.
