Description The study deals with the problems of explanation and causation and poses and attempts to answer to the three basic questions: Which role does causation play in explanations? What is a causal explanation? Where are the limits of this causal explanation? The answer to the first question is given in connection with the criticism of the conception that identifies explanations with arguments and that represents the most influential and prevailing account of explanation in the middle of the twentieth century. This conception is based on the view that particular facts are explained by subsuming them under general laws. The second question can be reformulated in the following way: if the causal explanation is a type of explanation that explains an event by means of its cause, then any satisfactory theory of explanation has to be grounded on a sufficiently discrete analysis of the causal relation. This inquiry then leads to the answer to the third question and to the delimitation of the causal explanation.
