Description The author of the study presents several examples of the clash between tradition and innovation in the field of literary criticism or scholarship. He demonstrates the case of comparative literary studies, and, above all, the development and modifications in genre studies (literary genology), literary history, reeditions of some works of Karel Krejčí, Frank Wollman, Matija Murko and Albert Pražák and analyzes the attempts of younger Western scholars at the revaluation of the older views of Bakhtin and Lukács as well as of Shklovskys term estrangement (ostranenie). The conflict between progressivism and conservatism in literary scholarship confirms that the substance of this discipline consists rather in a slow shift of emphasis than in a radical breakup with traditions.
