Description The article forms an introduction to a thematic issue on the translation of children's literature. It sums up various oppositions in defining the field (intentional vs. non-intentional; didactic vs. imaginative; fiction vs. non-fiction; adult narrator vs. (fictional) child narrator; child hero vs. adult hero), discusses some of its specifics (selection of texts; tendency towards adaptation; importance of illustrations etc.) and briefly mentions the beginnings of Czech theoretical reflection of children's literature as well as new trends in the field. It also points out children's literature as especially suitable for research in translation because it features all usual translation phenomena on texts that yield to interpretation more easily that fiction for adults.
