Description The study demonstrates the originality of Jean Rouaud's writing by analysing, comparing and contrasting the way in which the characters, who are at the same time real authors ancestors, cope with the burden of family memory. In this study, we found that writing in a spiral defies pathos. The main characters - Joseph and his father, uncle, aunt Mary, Peter's grandfather and the narrator's mother are recurrent. Their views on and attitudes towards family history evolve, again like a spiral.
