Description The terminological confusion over the definition of slang in French and Czech linguistics reflects a deeper confusion in the classification of the non-standard lexicon. Moreover, due to the dynamics of lexical usage this matter constantly eludes complex analyses in real time. This problem is further compounded by the different classification systems of lexicographers and lexicologists. One has simply to look at two dictionaries - or even two different editions of the same dictionary - to see that the boundaries between the labels vulg., arg., pop. and fam. are not at all watertight in French lexicography. Czech lexicography is also open to this kind of criticism, but its insertion of the expr. "Expressive" allows it to circumvent many problems associated with the categorization of borderline cases.
