Description This book deals with the term "youth slang" in its psychological and sociological motivations and tries to find common aspects for all teenagers, which could be called "youth slang universalisms", from a sample of students from three sociolinguistically different localities. It combines three methods of data-collection: participant observation in chosen classes where conversation was recorded secretly, a questionnaire about slang terms used between peers, and finally interviews involving epilinguistic topics. This research highlighted the increasing role of mass-media in the constitution of "common youth slang", how speaking some special type of slang relates to concepts of teenage identity, and the representation of a "slang imagination" that is shown in the example of Brno's local slang (known as "hantec") and in the slang of young descendants of immigrants in France, spoken mainly in Parisian suburban areas.
