Description From September 1608 to June 1609, the correspondence of Prague nuncio Antonio Caetani is full of alarming news about the situation in central Europe which was disadvantageous for the catholic part. Caetani saw the cause of these problems in the crisis that had broken out between Emperor Rudolf II and his brother Archduke Matthias. As a solution, the papal diplomacy suggested mutual reconciliation between the brothers already in spring 1608 which should have included both the compromise and new division of power. The nunciature correspondence shows, however, that this intention was not fully realized – the power was newly divided but the personal reconciliation was not achieved. Therefore, in 1609, the matter of reconciliation still remained one of the main points of the papal diplomacy.
