Description The word kurban in Bulgarian means bringing a blood sacrifice to God, saints or mythic defenders of family or village community. It is a specific phenomenon of spiritual culture, which goes across the entire structure of traditional and contemporary folk traditions in Bulgaria. Animal sacrifice is a part of family or community celebrations, annual and religious festivals. The article provides basic information about the roots and context of this ordinance and characterizes its traditional form. It focuses on the preparation of kurban as ritual meal and the relationship of the Orthodox Church to the custom.
