Description The chapter outlines the phonotactic structure of the syllable in Standard Czech by adopting the notion "distributional unit" which functions a syllable template. It consists of five pre-nuclear positions, one nuclear position and four post-nuclear positions. Every position may be occupied by a phoneme or, if the phoneme can be omitted, the position may be empty. The distributional unit functions as a formal device for predicting well-formed syllable-initial and syllable-final consonantal combinations in Czech.
