Description The contribution deals with combinatory and distributional characteristics of the phoneme /ř/ in present standard Czech, considered with the reference to a single syllable only. In particular, the combinability of /ř/ with vowels and consonants is examined. The analysis shows that in its ability to form combinations with other consonants the phoneme /ř/ is most similar to two classes of phonemes. First, it is the semiconsonants /r/ and /l/ in combinations where the phoneme is preceded by one, two or three consonants. Second, it is with the alveolar and palatal fricatives /s/, /z/, /š/, /ž/ in combinations where /ř/ occur between two consonants. Moreover, several distributional restrictions of /ř/ are mentioned.
