Description The paper sketches the structure of the syllable in Modern Czech. It uses a model known as "distributional unit" which is defined as a bundle of positions. A position is a syntagmatic point where a phoneme can occur and where it can be replaced by other phonemes or by zero. It is shown how such an analysis can be carried out with a special reference to pre-nuclear consonantal combinations.
