Description The paper deals with an orthographical analysis of correspondence received by Bedřich Smetana (1824–1884). The analysis is especially aimed at two groups of phenomena. To one of the groups belong words whose graphic form is influenced by German orthography, to the other group belong words whose pronunciation is reflected by the graphic form. All these phenomena can be explained on the basis of Smetana’s language profile – Smetana was a bilingual (Czech-German) speaker, German dominated for a long time in his written communication, he began to acquire written (and standard) Czech only as an adult.
