Description The book is based on the concept of cleavages, theories of rational choice and political marketing as well as spatial theory research. This one case study focuses on the research of two interlinked phenomenon: political issues, which appeared in the Czech public space prior to the 2006 general elections and policy space, where the issues were framed. In addition, the text analyzes the policy space and its dimensions, which represented the major political conflict in the Czech Republic between 2006 and 2008. Similarly, the crucial political actors (voters and the parties represented in the Parliament) and their positions are described. In general, the thesis aims to create a map depicting the Czech policy space and major cleavage issues in the period of 2006 to 2008. In order to create this map, the author uses four types of data sets with each of them helping to create one part (independently on the others): data stemming from the party manifestos‘ analysis; data out of the survey Our society conducted by the Public Opinion Research Centre (CVVM); data supplied by the European values study; and data on the Czech parties‘ positions collected through an expert survey. Spatial modelling and maps are not used to interpret/explain the causal relations between voters and parties, but to illustrate the distribution of voters’ preferences in different issues and their placement (position) in the policy space. Thus, the major goal is to create the Czech policy space map, which is going to be a useful foundation for further research. The author is not aiming at explanation of the future/possible electoral behaviour, however he provides information about the shape and occupancy of the Czech policy space in the period of 2006 - 2008.
