Description Modern Europeans refused to remain bound to their own traditions and connected their hopes with the idea of the continuous progress as a cornerstone of their society and culture. Some of them accepted the idea of the progress, but became disappointed with the modern science as its guarantor. In such situation they started to search for a new tradition, often in non-European cultures. But how this new tradition ought to look like? How the tradition, which ought not to support unchanging order, but the continuous move forwards, ought to be constituted? The lecture and the following discussion searches answers to these questions. It is organized on occasion of publication of the book Akulturace hinduismu a formování moderní religiozity: K sociálním dějinám českého okultismu 1891–1941 [Acculturation of Hinduism and Forming of Modern Religiosity: Social History of the Czech Occultism, 1891-1941], Praha: Malvern 2010.
