Description The amazing variety of styles and the personal adaptation Emilio Carballido makes of dramatic genres are interpreted as reflecting an ethical concern denouncing the mutilation of the authenticity of the individual by alien discourses or imposed points of view. The analysis shows how dramatic elements provide a new perspective on the lives of the characters and their audience. Thus, the conventional style of the realistic pieces is contradicted by a lyric metatext revealing the depth of the daily experiences. Moreover, epic and spectacular resources appear when Carballido tries to express mutilation of social groups or the entire nation. Finally, the ritual setting of his most antirealist plays allows viewers to delve into existential questions about human nature.
