Description The chapter summarises one of the major outputs of the research project Cognitive determinants of health-supportive behaviour, supported by Czech Grant Agency (No. 406/09/0611). The theoretical part deals with the relationship among optimism, pessimism and physical health. The main aim of the presented study is to systemize the individual aspects of health-supporting behaviour and to verify on a sample of Czech university students (N=1617) the relationship, demonstrated in the US and some European countries, between optimism and higher activity in relation to one’s own health on the one hand, and between pessimism and passivity on the other. Our research does not prove the relationship in all its scope; a higher degree of optimism is shown to be a predictor of a better care of mental hygiene only.
