Description | The oldest records of the ethnonym Czech indicate a starting point *Čex7. Up to now at least 20 etymologies have been proposed. In this article the identification of Sutnar, Boryś – Popowska-Taborska is discussed in details, namely *Čex7 = *čex7 "young man, boy" reconstructed on the basis of Slovenian and Kashubian. This equation is preferred for both its explicit transparency and external semantic parallels, cf. the names of the Goths vs. Norwegian gut "boy" or Burs (Tacitus: Buri) vs. Old Norse burr "son". |
