Description This study indicates and explains the infiltration of one of the conventional elements of the verismo style – striking chordal parallelisms – into operas by pre-war Czech modernists. This is done using as an example the one-act comic opera Poupě (“The Bud”, 1909–1910), one of the greatest works by Otakar Ostrčil (1879–1935). The introductory portion of the study deals with certain general characteristics of the style of Poupě, with a special emphasis on the influence of the tendencies of contemporary German opera and on the work’s ties to the traditions of “comic opera in the manner of Smetana” (Nejedlý). The second and third parts deal with the functions of chordal parallelism and especially the chains of parallel triads in operas from around the year 1900. The following, pivotal portion of the study uses eleven analytical and historical-hermeneutical probes to explain the functions of groups of parallel triads in the structure of Poupě.
