Description The 4th conference Rethinking 20th Century Europe, which will take place on 12 and 13 April 2016, carries the title: Driving forces in History? It follows our previous three postgraduate academic conferences which brought together various PhD students and young 20th Century European history researchers. We welcome all submissions which focus on European history from the First World War to the disintegration of the Eastern bloc. We would like participants to consider which events, organisations, ideas and individuals were the driving forces of European history in the 20th Century and to rethink the following questions: Were the individuals really the driving forces of history or was it the event which enabled the individuals to grow? What criteria did a particular event have to meet in order to be interpreted as being of historical importance? Did any organisation have the power to become a driving force of the 20th Century history and to uphold fundamental changes? Did revolutionary ideas and new concepts have the power to change the world or did the endeavour of their creators come to nothing? Alternatively, is it necessary to view the key to understanding historical events in the effort to comprehend mass movements and organisations? These are all important questions through which we would like to investigate well-known or lesser-known events in European history which perhaps did not seem a turning point in the eyes of contemporaries but, as time passed, we perceive them as such. Possibly it could be the direct opposite and what contemporaries considered historically important is now regarded as overestimated.
