Citation
Description The author will focus on the differences of the ritual of female circumcision in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The author puts on the foreground the traditional form of circumcision performed in Yogyakarta and its classification as less invasive one. Within different socio-economic and Muslim communities just one generation ago, the ritual is undergoing major changes, implemented by state regulations, which make the traditional form of ritual illegal and promote its medicalized version. Changes are also seen among the supporters of the two major Islamic non-governmental organizations: the traditionalist Nahdlatul Ulama and the modernist Muhammadiyah. The author explains the national and international regulations and guidelines, analyze the role of different authorities (state, religious leaders, and NGOs) on the persistence/abundance of FC and its globalized form (medicalization).
