| Description | The paper presents the results of two GEHIR studies (Generative Historiography of the Ancient Mediterranean, http://gehir.phil.muni.cz/), which demonstrate the applicability of methods of formalized modeling to solve "traditional" historical problems. The first of these case studies deals with a quantitative analysis of the factors that contributed to the spread of Egyptian cults in the Aegean Sea during the reign of the first Ptolemaic (from the 4th until the 2nd century BC). In particular, the study addresses the question of whether political or economic factors played a major role in the propagation of Egyptian cults, or the extent to which these factors were acting together. The second case study focuses on claryfing the role played by the Roman Army and its infrastructure (in the form of a network of military forts and communications) in the process of the diffusion of mithraism in the Roman Empire. |
