Description Miroslav Tyrš is known mainly as one of the founders of Sokol, but he was originally a philosopher and his second lifelong love was, besides exercise, also art. He wrote dozens of studies and art criticisms, has participated as a juror in many art competitions (for instance decoration of the National Theater) and even earned a professorship at Charles University where he lectured at the end of his life. The paper chronologically presents its basic ideas and theoretical foundations that appeared in his art studies. Influenced by Greek culture, Schopenhauer's pessimism and voluntarism, Darwin's theory of evolution, or the sociological-aesthetic method of Hippolyte Taine, he created an extensive literary work, still forming a fascinating and distinctive whole.
