Description School reform in Austria after 1918 is often associated with social reforms in Red Vienna and thus perceived as socialist school reform. This paper argues that this perception is due to the biographies of its main protagonist, Otto Glöckel and of his most popular fellows. After a short period, when Glöckel initiated school reform within the whole territory of Austria as head of the federal educational department, the scope of his activities shifted to Vienna, due to political circumstances. This narrative overlooks that curricular reform initiated 1919 was broadly adopted outside Vienna as well. A great number of elementary school teachers were partisans of Glöckel’s school reform. However, outside Vienna, this school reform was not necessarily associated with socialist ideas. Elementary school teachers outside Vienne rather emphasized the new teaching methods proposed by German reform pedagogy, which were at the heart of Glöckel’s curricular reform.
