Description The purpose of the present article is to offer a new etymological solution to the Tocharian B animal name known in nom.pl yerkwantalan~, designating some (feline?) predator. It is interpreted as the compound consisting of *yerkwaN, analyzed as the determined form of the hypothetical u-stem *yerk(w), and *tala, the deverbal adjective from the verb täl- ‘to carry’, together perhaps ‘that one, carrying away rams or he-goats’. The meaning of the prey as ‘ram’ or ‘he-goat’ is tentatively determined with regard to Shughni yirk ‘(breeding) ram’, isolated within Iranian, which looks as the Tocharian borrowing.
