Description The presentation discusses 1) borderline zones between direct discourse and other types of discourse, ambiguous instances and 2) zero-marked instances and cases that share with the direct discourse the literality but differ in other aspects. The first group includes structures such as pure quotations, and discourse and pragmatic markers (e.g. verbal forms that emphasize the illocutionary force). The second group consists of instances of mixed speech and voices of a "hypothetical opponent" that could be, at the same time, interpreted as rhetorical questions. These phenomena show that borders of direct discourse are fuzzy and an important role is played by the context and the communicative situation.
