| Description | The Sokol Movement (Towarzystwo Gimnastyczne Sokół), founded in 1862 by Miroslav Tyrš and Jindřich Fügner in Prague, soon became the most important gymnastic organisation in the Czech lands. Its first Polish offshoot (“gniazdo”) was founded only a few years later, in 1867, in the city of Lviv, which at that time belonged to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In the following decades, Sokol made a major impact not only on the development of gymnastics and sport but also on the history of art, with hundreds of Sokol gym buildings (“sokolnie”), sculptures, posters, postcards, and other objects of visual art created on its initiative, especially in the territory of the Slavic nations. The lecture will present a brief history and the philosophy of this movement both in Bohemia and Poland. It will also point out some specifics based on different political, religious, and cultural conditions, which were reflected both in the theoretical and practical functioning of Sokol and in its art. |
