| Description | The current central topic within the workshops of doctoral students in Brno has become the task, assignment and function in architecture and art. From approximately the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, approaches to the role and function of art appeared more and more frequently in European art history (cf. e.g. Hans Belting, Das Werk im Kontext, 1986; Hellmut Lorenz /ed./, Geschichte der bildenden Kunst in Österreich: Barock, 1998). In the framework of this workshop, we will now think about the application of the terms "assignment, artistic role and function" in art research and explore the possibilities of their use in different times. In the introductory remarks, we mention three classical approaches to this topic: Jacob Burckhardt and his concept of Kunstaufgabe - Michael Baxandall and intention (charge and brief) - Gottfried Semper and his equation of artistic function. |
