Description The chapter investigates the role science fiction plays in connection with artificial intelligence. It pays attention to the history of the genre and its specifics that empower it with critical power and competence. The time period covered history covered stretches from the 19th Century to the 21st. The findings suggest that the critical function of SF stems from the the fact it evolved in reaction to particular social and technological changes; as a narrative construct it offers the readers contact with "artificial minds" of the characters and it is also connected with a specific form of capitalist production. In the end the question arises whether the changes in artificial intelligence are not so quick and profound that SF is not able to keep up with them.
