Description The Exhibition of Drawings by Great Masters from the 16th to the 19th Centuries from the collection of Arnold Skutezky (1850–1936), organised by Julius Leisching, director of the Archduke Rainer Museum for Art and Industry in Brno (now the Moravian Gallery in Brno) in 1910, provided visitors a unique opportunity to see for the first time an exceptional collection of its time. The exhibition, which ‘aroused general attention and admiration with its richness and beauty’ and was considered in the contemporary press as impressive or stimulating, presented mainly works by 16th-century Italian masters, Dutch draughtsmen of the Golden Age and Viennese drawings of the first half of the 19th century. The fine taste of the collector and the richness of his drawing collection, which was temporarily moved from Rajhrad to the museum’s exhibition rooms for only one month, were appreciated by the experts and visitors alike. During this time, when 428 drawings were presented and a catalogue was published, tours were organised with expert guidance by either Julius Leisching or Arnold Skutezky himself. The main point for the public was a drawing, owned for merely a few weeks and presented as a work by Rembrandt van Rijn, which was compared with works in the Albertina in Vienna.
