Description Besední dům in Brno is one of the most significant designs by Theophil Hansen outside of Vienna. This text focuses on an up until now neglected feature of the structure – its sculptural decoration. Making use of Hansen‘s plans (Kupferstich Kabinet ABK Wien, Brno City Museum), it indicates that the architect, from the very beginning, counted on sculptural decoration and finds analogies with other buildings by Hansen. The article will focus, among other things, on the statues on the attic of the building which came from the ceramics factory in Inzenzdorf am Wienerberg. Hansen chose them in person and actually used the products from this factory repeatedly for his structures. On the basis of the architect‘s letters (Archive of the City of Brno), it is apparent that, as concerns the structure and its decoration, he was interested in the complete details. He designed himself most of the decorative elements on both the facade and the interior and consequently the sculptural workshop of Ferdinand Kellner was subjugated to the role of mere craftsmen working in accordance to the plans. The article, among other things, counters, on the basis of archive documents, the hypothesis about the involvement of the stonemason workshop of Adolf Loos Sr. on Besední dům.
