Description | Along with the lively discussion of the direct involvement of women in the rites of the early Christian Roman Church, the much less threatening, but still powerful, rediscovery of female agency in the religious context has occurred since the 1980s under the influence of emerging women studies . The contribution draws from this consolidated line of research and offers an overview of the visual and textual manifestations of the agency of widows and virgins, elevated above all other women for their sexual renunciation. The investigation is based on two case studies of female depictions ad martyres, i.e. the fresco with Christ between the martyrs Simplicius, Faustinianus, Rufinianus and their virginal sister Beatrix at the Catacombs of Generosa and with the widow Turtura presented to the Virgin by the martyrs Felix and Adauctus at the Catacombs of Commodilla. |
