Description | This essay develops a critical reading of Juan Carlos Rodríguez's (1942-2016) book, Theory and History of Ideological Production: The First Bourgeois Literatures (1974). It first presents its historical and theoretical genesis: Francoism, the years of theory, the intersection of the literary and academic fields, the influence of Spinoza, Marx, Deleuze (Spinoza and the Philosophy of Expression), Althusser, and the parallel of Jameson. It discusses its fundamental notions: radical historicity, ideological unconscious, ideological matrix, animism/organicism, as well as the debate on the transition from feudalism to capitalism (in contrast to the work of E. M. Wood). We cover Theory and History's interpretation of the ideological formations of early bourgeois literature, focusing on "bourgeois animism" (Garcilaso, Fray Luis, San Juan, Herrera, Donne) and what we have called the "dialectic of solitude," touching on the picaresque and the historical formations of individuality. A brief concluding chapter presents other possible theoretical paths based on the key contributions of the Hispanist from Granada. The work includes an unpublished lecture by Juan Carlos Rodríguez. |
