Description Clean and pure water was considered one of the city's jewels in the past. Fountains and wells became a kind of architectural and sculptural homage to the water element, without which it would be impossible to live in cities. The city council was the commissioner of many of these representative monuments. This is also true of Brno's most famous fountain, the Parnassus, which was built in the 1690s to a design by the eminent architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. Somewhat overlooked nowadays is another Baroque fountain from the 1690s called Merkur's Fountain, once located on the Lower Market (Freedom Square). What was its artistic concept? And what kind of fountains and architectural adaptations of wells did modern and contemporary art bring to Brno?
