| Description | The chapter focuses on the position of scenography and the art-form of the so-called independent theatre in the Czech Republic between 1989-2014 in general. It seeks to reflect the plurality of aesthetics, themes and stylistic expressions through the "canon" of the international competitive exhibition Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (hereafter PQ). In doing so, I trace the exhibitions that represented Czech scenography for various local theatre backgrounds in the various editions of PQ after 1989. In addition to this "official selection", I also offer an extension of the context to include projects that, for various reasons, did not appear at PQ. In other words, the second part of the paper presents the artistic design of those productions that are reflected in the other sections of the publication "Theatre and Freedom: The First Decade of Independence of Czech Theatre after 1989", and which are selected from the fields of musical theatre, drama, puppetry, physical theatre and pantomime. |
