Description The aim of the paper is to present a part of the research, which focused on different ways of visual-spatial representation of art exhibitions in the Czech context. The focus of my interest is the profession that is most often referred to today as exhibition architecture. It is a term that is, however, seen as insufficient or inadequate in my research – analysed cases demonstrate exhibitions where spatial design functions as a distinctive artistic-interpretive layer on the borderline between authorial gesture and utilitarian service. I am looking at such exhibitions in two working categories: firstly, these are the realisations of the so-called "Czechoslovak exhibition school", especially from the 1960s, when the topic of exhibition scenography was systematically theorized. Secondly, it is a group of exhibitions whose spatial design is prepared by contemporary artists. Specifically in the second case, I focus on the situation after 1989, when the state-organized activity of exhibition design ceased to function, the profession of "exhibition scenography" disappeared, and after a period of institutional vacuum, "exhibition architecture" emerged.
