Description The paper examines the memories of narrators living in four different European countries who experienced the Second World War and the post-war reconstruction period. The key question of the article is whether there is accommon narrative of the post-war European history which is shared by European citizens. What are the key events in the narrators’ life-stories, and are they comparable? Moreover, are there films that tell stories similar to those presented by the narrators? The research is based on an analysis of 42 interviews recorded in France, Italy, Germany, and the Czech Republic (10 or 11 for each country) as a part of the international project HERA: Visual Culture of Trauma, Obliteration and Reconstruction in Post- Second World War Europe. The comparative method and oral history method are used to answer the research questions.
