Description Bibliotherapy became institutionally established at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, its use has spread beyond the clinical environment to public libraries and schools, where it is mainly applied in the form of developmental bibliotherapy. Its theoretical foundations were formulated in the 1960s and have remained essentially unchanged to this day. However, current research in psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience shows that traditional theory, based primarily on the method of introspection, is no longer adequate to explain the complex nature of the bibliotherapy process. This paper, therefore, presents a proposal on how the theoretical framework of bibliotherapy can be enriched with current findings from interdisciplinary research, particularly in the fields of art psychology and neurocognitive approaches.
