| Description | In the present article the Tocharian A word lak*, translated as ‘stallion, steed’, is analyzed from the point of view of its attestation, internal structure, and external comparanda in both the genetic and areal perspectives. A new Indo-European etymology of this word has been formulated, allowing the interpretation as ‘jumper’, in conformity with some other hippological terms used in various Indo-European traditions. But there is also Middle Chinese *la^k < Postclassic Chinese *l(h)ak ‘white horse with black mane; camel’, which could be a source of the Tocharian word, but not vice versa. The same Chinese term, or better, its South Chinese dialectisms, may be a source of Turkic *löŻk and Classical Persian lok, Kurdish lok ‘male of camel’. |
