Description The paper will focus on selected economic and social aspects of the lives of pre-tolerance Crypto-Protestants through a survey of the region surrounding the pilgrimage site on Mount Hostýn, approximately on the border between the regions of Moravian Wallachia and Haná. Between 1777 and 1781, local peasants joined a rebellion of Crypto-Protestants that broke out in the neighboring Wallachian estates of Vsetín and Vizovice, triggered by a false rumor spread by three missionaries about the declaration of religious tolerance. In connection with the investigation and suppression of this peasant rebellion, an extensive and varied collection of sources was created, including, among other things, interrogation records of detained Crypto-Protestants and regular reports from local officials and church representatives. This paper will present what information about serfdom can be gleaned from these sources: property background, livelihood, physical appearance of subjects, survival strategies of Crypto-Protestants in a predominantly Catholic society, and mutual contacts between pre-tolerance Crypto-Protestants across the region under study.
