Description This presentation aims to illustrate the conflictual relations between the Catholic parish clergy and lay believers, using the example of parishes and villages in Moravian Wallachia in the period 1777-1781, when the region was struggling with a widespread rebellion by local crypto-Protestants. The serfs' unrest broke out after three missionaries began spreading false reports of religious freedom among the serfs in order to ascertain the true state of confessional relations in an area that had so far successfully resisted the post-White Mountain recatholization efforts. Although the false report was soon refuted by the authorities, the non-Catholic population resolutely rejected the ordered conversion to the Catholic faith and began to resist: in particular, they decided to boycott Catholic ceremonies and refused to continue paying church taxes. The resistance of the subjects was motivated, among other things, by long-standing deteriorated relations with the local parish clergy, who often treated subjects "suspicious" in their faith with hostility or undisguised resistance and contempt. The attitudes of local priests and the resistance strategies of non-Catholic subjects will be presented in this presentation based on an analysis of an exceptionally well-preserved collection of reports by the local clergy and interrogation protocols of detained crypto-Protestants. Enlightened clergyman and Mikulov provost Johann Leopold Hay was tasked with calming the agitated atmosphere in Moravian Wallachia, and he decided to change the harsh rhetoric of recatholization that had been used up to that point. The article will describe the strategy adopted by the provost, based on moderation and empathy towards his restless subjects, which is reflected, for example, in Hay's detailed instructions for the Catholic parish clergy in Moravian Wallachia and in the specific changes in the posts of the local clergy.
