| Description | Towards the end of the archaic period of the ancient Greek social, political and cultural development, and in the era of continuous international and domestic conflicts gaining in strength during the fifth century BC the term hybris obtained a more general, somewhat less violent, but anyway still a negative colouring. Even the Greek lyrical poets and the great Attic authors of comedies and tragedies were convinced that recurrent periods of happiness lead to hybris and bring punishment in retaliation. In my present paper, I wanted to exemplify this idea by briefly analyzing the typical examples of this phenomenon in the Ancient Greek literature. – The present-day poets would do without divine interventions, but the dramatic image of the social and the moral aspects of today’s hybris would hardly be less weighty and interesting. |
