Description The study discusses a problem of pious and charity activities of burghers, i.e. changing their attitudes towards church institutions in the 18th century. Basic aspects are exemplified by a case of Brno chemist Bocken, whose dealing on the deathbed has been compared with another citizens and put into a broader context. The author examines mostly last wills and follows legacies to the religious orders, confraternities and charitaty subjects. The results, presenting just a little and slow decline of the pious bequests, question the traditionally discussed problem of secularization in towns during the second half of the 18th century.
