Description In the paper, the author examines the aim of Martianus Capella's work: i. e. to make the content of Liberal Arts accessible to everyone. Martianus determined the number of the arts to be seven and presented them as forming a complete cycle. His arts were set within a strictly hierarchical order, each linked to a planetary sphere within an ascensional scheme of heavenly journey. Martianus' model proved much appreciated, as documented by the widerspread popularity of his work throughout the Middle Ages.
