Description In the introductory part (Ivo Pospíšil) the author manifests the conception of Central Europe as a multi- and intercultural phenomenon. The first part of the text called The Sorbs in the Context of Central Europe. A Small Nation in Multicultural and Globalized World at the Beginning of the 21st Century (Josef Šaur) summarizes contemporary language and national situation of Lusatian Sorbs. He deals with the questions of the contemporary number of the users of Sorbian, of the demographic development of Sorbian population and its millenian co-existence with the German element. He demonstrates Sorbian folk customs, comtemporary media, political representation of the Sorbs, the problems of financing their national life and the problem of the system of education. All the mentioned subjects are situated in the historical and spatial context of Central Europe. The second part called Central Europe and Russia: Views, Reception and Intersections (Ivo Pospíšil) analyzes on several examples, which sometimes directly concern Masaryk University, the relations of various Central-European phenomena to the cultural space of Russia. One of them is the personality of Jiří Horák, professor of comparative Slavonic literatures at Masaryk University in the 1920s, the Czech and the Central-European reception of the work of F. M. Dostoevsky, „the Russian traces“ in Michal Viewegh’s work and a remarkable book by Břetislav Palkovský Towards the Soviet Civilisation (1936). The author demonstrates the key-role of permeating, intervention and interference of various phenomena and its complementary nature.
