Description The presentation discusses the forms and functions of conversational joking in live text commentary. Word play, punning, joking and teasing do not necessarily disrupt the topical "talk" (i.e., the actual live sports commentary) - they occasionally become the very subject matter of pseudo-conversational exchanges, thereby redefining the speech event from a referential media text into an instance of interpersonal gossip.
