English Language and Literature

This degree study programme is divided into two tracks: Linguistics and Literary and Cultural Studies. Each student chooses one specialization and the focus of their studies is in that track. All students must complete five type A/required courses. The remainder of the programme consists of type B/selective and type C/elective courses that the student chooses based on the track chosen. The student then writes a Master’s thesis based on the track and relevant coursework. With the exception of some courses in translation, all teaching, coursework, and exams in this study programme are carried out in the English language.

Waiver of the entrance examination: The written part of the entrance examination may be waived to graduates of "single subject" and "major" forms of the BA study programme "English Language and Literature".

Graduates with this degree are capable of complex written and oral expression in English. They have a deep knowledge of the literatures, cultures, and histories of the major English-speaking countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, and the Commonwealth countries. They are able to analyse various forms and functions of language in diverse genres and communicative situations. In addition to work in the fields of translating, interpreting, editing, journalism, tourism, and teaching at both the secondary and tertiary levels, graduates are well-suited for any profession that demands the ability to think and express themselves independently and critically.

Only applicants holding a Bachelor´s diploma can be admitted to this Master's study programme after passing the entrance examination

Criteria for evaluation

1st Round – Document Evaluation (max. 50 points, min. 25 to be invited for the 2nd round)

In the first round, the applicant’s submitted materials are assessed, including previous studies, motivation letter, recommendation letters, and a sample of academic work (bachelor’s thesis).

2nd Round – Interview (max. 50 points, min. 25 to pass the exam)

• Basic knowledge in the field of English studies at the bachelor’s level (linguistics, literary studies, subject-specific disciplines) – max. 10 points
• Student’s motivation for pursuing a master’s degree – max. 10 points
• Language proficiency/competence – max. 10 points
• General academic aptitude (based on previous academic performance) – max. 10 points
• General potential for academic work in the field (based on the submitted bachelor’s thesis) – max. 10 points

How the interview is conducted:

During the interview, the committee evaluates the above areas, focusing on knowledge, motivation, language competence, and academic potential.

Further studies are possible in the doctoral degree study programmes of English linguistics or English literature.
